Optical zoom lens of at least 3x; 3.0megapixels or more; Storage media is important, CF are physically large but cheap and durable. Sony uses a proprietary relatively expensive type. New Fuji's use xD which is also expensive. SD/MMC are almost as cheap as CF but much smaller, yet they're not at the same storage capacity levels. SmartMedia is another but it is losing followers and may lose R&D and therefore eventually increase in cost and not keep up with capacities of others. The way a camera is powered matters a lot. 4 AA's are going to be heavy. 2 AA's is very nice and light, but you're going to want to buy a set of rechargable NiMA's. Proprietary rechargable LI-Ions are usually the best. best. Taking movies is nice and if you want to be able to, don't get a camera that wont record sound. If you dont care about movies then forget the mic/speaker in the camera.
